Is Wally wearing any shoes? They look suspiciously like socks to me. In which case - grand effort old chap, that must have been a very uncomfortable walk!
Gerrod: at that point they were still shoes, though by the adventure's end they might just as well have been socks.
Helen: We bought three umbrellas in our time time there (we kept losing them), and wrested a fourth from the grasp of a greedy hotelier. Yes, *that's* how much it rained in Turkey. Ridiculous.

You carry an umbrella when you're hiking through remote Turkey? Or were you going for the full effect?
Either way, kudos...

And who did the umbrella originally belong to? (don't say the hotelier - I'm looking for something more ancient and exotic)
The honest answer would be, One of the other guests.
But then, who *knows* what kind of exotic guests they had staying at The Big Apple Hostel.
