City Limits

Year 9 Geography, south London.

The kids were working on a project in small groups. Each group had to choose a country, research it, then make a display poster, listing important facts like official language, population, major cities, etc.

One group of girls had orchestrated a cunning ruse--they had chosen to research England (and so imagined themselves on a straight course for success). But as I approached, they were experiencing trouble.

"Sir, what are some major cities?"

"Of England?"

"Yeah. Apart from London."

"Girls, seriously, you can't think of any other major cities in England?"

"Um,"

"Just name some other big cities you've heard of."

"Ahhhh …"

"Any."

"Peckham?"

No, not Peckham.

Peckham is pretty major, Jules. I remember seeing at least one bus route that ended there. And you know you've made it big when you have a bus route.

Next time a class asks where you're from, tell them Peckham. EXOTIC.
